News: Concept Frames recently participated in a joint fire test of two stainless steel door openings. 29 members of the Hollow Metal Manufacturers’ Association sponsored the fire test of a 4’0” x 8’0” single door and 7’0” x 7’2” paired opening that was conducted at Underwriters Laboratories in Northbrook, Illinois on March 3rd, 2008. The fire test yielded preliminary positive results as the honeycomb doors performed well. The final results are forthcoming from the testing labs. We will keep you updated as soon as we are able to offer you a fire rated stainless steel door.

Subject: Painting metal doors and frame
|
Posted by: Concept Frames, Inc.
|
News: The Hollow Metal Manufacturers Association has recently published a “Tech Note” titled “Painting Hollow Metal Products HMMA 840 TN01 07”. This publication addresses issues surrounding the painting of hollow metal doors and frames and contains recommendations that should be taken into consideration when hollow metal doors and frames are used.
One recurring issue that Concept Frames has experienced over time is the use of high gloss paint on our door and frames. Our metal doors and frames are assembled using methods that are common to the door and frame industry. According to the publication, “Spot welding is a traditional method for joining hollow metal door and frame components together. This process produces spot weld marks that are difficult or impractical for complete removal and are not considered a manufacturing defect. The markings may not be visible with a flat low gloss primer but may appear after a high gloss finish coat is applied. The use of high gloss paint will increase the show through tendencies and is not recommended. A maximum paint gloss rating of 20% reflectance, measured using a 60º gloss meter, would be standard recommendation.”
Spot weld marks can appear where stiffeners, endcaps and other components are welded to doors. They also appear when hardware reinforcements and anchors are welded to frames and doors. We finish our hollow metal doors and frames to minimize the show through of these markings. Concept Frames recommends strict attention be paid to the type of finish paint that is specified on your projects and to make sure that high gloss paint is not being used.
